From the beginning of World War II best shooters in Soviet regiments were picked and received further training as snipers. In early spring of 1942, a special sniper school was opened in Veshnyaki near Moscow. Soviet snipers were armed with Mosin or SVT rifles fitted with scopes. The Soviet snipers took part in many decisive battles and often played a crucial role in them. In particular they are famous for participation in the battle for Stalingrad.
