The total distance between the two cities is 2,979 kilometres and the journey takes three days and two nights. The extended 1,420 km rail track from Alice Springs to Darwin was completed in 2004. The train pulls 43 carriages (1 kilometre in length) making the Ghan with two locomotives the longest passenger train in Australia
