Postage Stamp - 1/97 A6M2 Zero
The A6M2 Zero is a carrier-based fighter aircraft with amazing speed, range, and maneuverability. It was operated by the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II and would be the main air opponent of the US and allies in the Pacific theatre of that war. The Zero completely outclassed its US adversaries at the start of the war, but the US caught up, and by the end of the war the Zero had been reduced to a means of making kamikaze attacks against Allied ships. On 7 December 1941, the Japanese aircraft carrier Akagi with five carriers and fourteen other ships launched an air offensive against the US naval base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. This model is a replica of the Zero piloted by Lt-Cmdr Shigeu Itaya, leader of the first wave of the attack.
