Postage Stamp 1/350 US Navy Blimp L8 The Ghost Blimp
Postage Stamp - 1/350 US Navy Blimp L-8 "The Ghost Blimp"
The L-class blimps were originally commercial airships used for advertising purposes, but they were repurposed by the US Navy in World War II for training and coastal patrols. The blimp known as L-8 was on a routine anti-submarine patrol off the coast of California when it lost contact with its base. After floating on a dense fog bank for some time, it landed in the streets of Daly City – without its two crew members. No trace of them was ever found. The L-8 would be dubbed “The Ghost Blimp” and was avoided by Navy personnel as much as possible. It was retired from active service in March 1944.
