Postage Stamp 1/200 Lockheed YF12 NASA
Postage Stamp - 1/200 Lockheed YF-12 NASA
The YF-12 never became an operational aircraft; it was used as an experimental fighter-interceptor in a joint USAF-NASA research program during the 1960s. The point of the research was to study the effects of sustained high-altitude flights on aircraft. The YF-12 was constructed mainly of titanium alloy, and its flat black surfaces enabled it to withstand temperatures over 500°F / 260°C. It set speed and altitude records in 1965, and was the precursor of the SR-71 Blackbird. The only remaining YF-12 is currently displayed at the US Air Force Museum at Dayton, Ohio.
