Postage Stamp - 1/155 Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress “Nine-O-Nine”
The four-engine Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress became the iconic US heavy bomber of World War II, seeing extensive service in the US Army Air Force and the RAF. The B-17G variant added extra armour and armaments, which gave this tough bomber the capacity to withstand heavy damage in action and still make it home. The B-17 “Nine-O-Nine” was named after the last three digits of its serial number: 42-31909. From the time it went into service in 1944, this plane flew 132 consecutive missions without aborting for mechanical problems or loss of crew. In all, the 909 flew 1,129 hours and dropped 562,000 pounds of bombs before returning to the US at war’s end. A fully restored and operational B-17G in “Nine-O-Nine” colours is now part of the Wings of Freedom commemorative airshow.
