Originally developed for the US Air Force in the 1950s, the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter is a single-engine, high-altitude, supersonic fighter aircraft. Its design features extremely thin trapezoid wings, and it was the first combat aircraft capable of sustained flight at Mach 2. The was operated by the armed forces of numerous countries between 1958 and 2004. The Starfighter numbered 56-901 served with the US Air Force during the height of the Cold War in the 1960s. While stationed at Hahn, Germany, in 1962, 56-901 set an altitude and speed record for an operational F-104C, reaching 92,000 feet / 28,000 m, at a speed of Mach 2.5. It is now on display at an air museum in Connecticut, USA.
