Hobbyco Reviews: Netflix's One Piece

For many, the prospect of adapting beloved anime and manga series into Western live-action productions is fraught with trepidation. The history of such adaptations, often marked by poor casting choices, a lack of faithfulness to the source material, and execution missteps, has left fans wary. And so, when Netflix announced its live-action adaptation of One Piece, it was met with a mix of excitement and scepticism.

Allen's Take:
Bringing the Unthinkable to Life

Our Social Media Content Manager, Allen, couldn't help but wonder if One Piece was simply too goofy, cartoony, and bizarre a franchise to successfully transition to live action. The medium of anime, he argued, relies on techniques and designs that defy realistic human anatomy and physics, elements that may not translate well with live actors. However, Allen acknowledged that successful live-action adaptations of anime exist and can introduce new audiences to these fantastic series.

Surprisingly, the Netflix adaptation of One Piece was a delightful surprise for Allen. It was an energetic, action-packed series that didn't shy away from its zany source material. He commended the cast, with Iñaki Godoy brilliantly capturing Luffy's boundless positivity, and Emily Rudd delivering depth and nuance as Nami. While there were plot changes in pacing, such as Nami joining the crew early, these alterations often enhanced the storytelling. The action sequences, a crucial aspect of One Piece, were executed remarkably well, retaining the dynamic flair of the manga and anime. The set design, featuring vibrant and unique locations, was another highlight.

Allen noted that the adaptation's success was attributed to the team's love for the source material and the strict supervision of Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece. The series was earnest, unapologetic, and committed to capturing the essence of the anime. With a second season already announced, "One Piece" on Netflix appears to be a promising and faithful adaptation.

    Dom's View:
    A Careful and Accessible Adaptation

Dom, our avid retail assistant, shared his thoughts on the Netflix adaptation, emphasising that it was produced with care and love for the source material. Unlike some other Netflix adaptations, One Piece remained true to the anime's crucial story beats while also respecting the personalities of the main cast. While it wasn't an exact remake, it offered accessibility to newcomers who might be daunted by the thousand-plus episodes of the anime. Dom highlighted the show's accessibility as its greatest strength, making it an excellent introduction to a wider audience.

Additionally, Dom praised the series for its ability to capture the camaraderie and spirit of adventure that defines One Piece. The chemistry among the main characters, as they embark on their journey to find the legendary One Piece treasure, felt genuine and heartwarming. The adaptation effectively conveyed the overarching themes of friendship, resilience, and the pursuit of dreams that are central to Eiichiro Oda's storytelling. For fans familiar with the manga and anime, this adaptation offered a fresh perspective on beloved characters and moments, while for newcomers, it served as an inviting entry point into the rich world of One Piece.

      Abby's Insight:
      Staying True to the Manga

Abby, one of our hardworking Graphic Designers, appreciated the Netflix series for staying true to the original source material, the One Piece manga. She found the show consistently engaging, with well-choreographed action scenes and a mix of realistic settings and CGI elements for powers and creatures. The character development was impressive, with glimpses into the main cast's backstories adding depth to the story. Abby commended the cast for their performances, particularly Inaki Godoy's portrayal of Luffy and Mackenyu's take on Zoro.

        Nate's Review:
An Artful Departure and Improved Wow Factor

Our Brand Manager for Anime/Bandai, Nate, lauds Netflix's One Piece adaptation for its wise departure from the anime's character designs. He believes that eschewing Sanji's curly eyebrows and Usopp's exaggerated nose in the live-action version was a smart move to avoid potential visual absurdity. Nate also commends the decision to tone down Sanji's "loving" personality, finding it more suitable for the live-action portrayal. Additionally, he notes that Buggy's character became substantially scarier, aligning with the inherent creepiness often associated with clowns. The adaptation effectively preserves the essence of the characters while making necessary adjustments to the medium.

While Nathan appreciates the faithful adaptation of clothing from the anime to the live-action series, he points out a minor hiccup: the footwear choices. In some instances, the sandals appeared comical and inconsistent with the overall aesthetics. However, he does acknowledge that these choices might be attributed to safety concerns, as sandals are not exactly the most practical footwear for action-packed scenes.

Moreover, Nathan expresses his preference for the original Japanese voice cast, particularly in the delivery of attack names. He believes that these iconic moments lose some of their impact in English. These insights, coupled with his appreciation for the departures from the anime's design and character nuances, contribute to his overall positive impression of the series.
